Overview

Task management across five decoupled microservices, with Redis and Kafka syncing state between active users at sub-20ms latency.

  • Task, user, notification, activity and auth services are coupled only through Kafka events.
  • Redis pub/sub pushes state changes to active users instantly.

01

Problem

Two users on the same board should see each other's changes without refreshing. A monolith does this easily; the goal was to achieve it with five separate services and no direct calls between them.

02

Approach

Each service owns its database; communication is Kafka events only. For user-facing live updates, Redis pub/sub is used: the task service publishes the change and the connection layer pushes it to the relevant users.

04

Key decisions

  1. 01

Kafka for durable flow, Redis for instant push

They don't replace each other: Kafka is the durable inter-service event log, Redis pub/sub is the millisecond push to the user.

Outcome

State synchronization between active users measured under 20ms. Role-based access control is shared across all services.
